In the quiet, rural community of West Blocton, Alabama, the life of 24-year-old Kelse Ely Kendrick was brought to a tragic and violent end on the night of July 18, 2024. A stay-at-home mother, Kelse was known for her caregiver's heart, always ready to help family and friends. Her life revolved around her two young children, a son named Kaleb and a daughter named Kynli.
On that fateful Thursday, the tranquility of their home was shattered in an act of unimaginable violence that would leave the small town reeling in disbelief.
Emergency services received a chilling call from the residence, initially reporting that a child had been shot. As law enforcement rushed to the scene, the horror of the situation escalated with subsequent reports that more children were victims. Upon their arrival, they discovered a horrific scene that even seasoned officers would later describe as the worst they had ever witnessed. Kelse Ely Kendrick and four young children had been fatally shot in the head with a handgun. The children were later identified as her own, Kaleb and Kynli, and two of their cousins, Colton and Haley Daniels.
The suspect in this devastating mass shooting was found at the home and taken into custody without a struggle. He was identified as Kelse's 32-year-old husband, Brandon Allan Kendrick II. He was subsequently arrested and charged with five counts of capital murder. In the aftermath, family members revealed that Kelse had been trying to support her husband through his struggles with mental health. In a subsequent court appearance, Brandon Kendrick entered a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
