In the early hours of a spring day in Washington, D.C., a life was tragically cut short, leaving behind a family searching for answers and a community grappling with another act of violence. Matthew E. Smith, a 34-year-old Black male, was in the 1600 block of 16th Street, SE, on April 21, 2016, when the distinct sound of gunfire pierced the night at approximately 1:27 AM.
