In the late hours of a Friday night in Washington, D.C., the life of 27-year-old Treyvon Johnson, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 26, 2016, violence erupted in the 300 block of 34th Street, NE, in the River Terrace neighborhood, resulting in a hail of gunfire that would leave two men dead and another wounded.
Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting just after 11:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene. Treyvon Johnson and another man, 40-year-old Raeshard Blue, were found on a sidewalk, both having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel treated both men at the scene, but Johnson’s injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead right there on the street. Blue was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he too succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The violence of that night was not limited to the fatal shootings.
A third individual was also found near the scene, having suffered multiple stab wounds. This victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and survived the attack. The gunfire also caused damage to property in the vicinity, including three vehicles.
In the wake of the double homicide, the Metropolitan Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible for the deaths of Treyvon Johnson and Raeshard Blue. A significant reward was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. However, in the immediate aftermath, no arrests were made, and police did not release any descriptions of potential suspects as they continued to piece together the events of that fatal night. The case remains an open investigation.
