On March 30, 1974, in Ketchikan, Alaska, 41-year-old Police Officer Earl Ray Hoggard responded to a call from residents who had returned home to find their door open. Upon entering the apartment with his sergeant, Officer Hoggard was met with gunfire from a suspect armed with a .22 caliber rifle, resulting in his fatal injury.
