On October 25, 2017, 64-year-old Brian Stanton of Ketchikan, Alaska, was fatally shot at the Phoenix Logging Camp in Keete Inlet on Prince of Wales Island, approximately 15 miles from Hydaburg. Alaska State Troopers were notified around 6:30 a.m. by camp staff who discovered Stanton deceased in his trailer, having been shot in the back of the head while seated on a couch.
