On December 8, 2021, 21-year-old Specialist Hunter Trey Stafford was found deceased in his off-post residence in Fairbanks, Alaska. Originally from Munford, Tennessee, Stafford joined the U.S. Army in January 2019 and was stationed at Fort Wainwright as an aircraft powerplant repairer with the 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment. His death was part of a concerning pattern, as it marked at least the fifth off-duty death among Alaska-based soldiers since mid-October 2021.
