In the early hours of May 27, 2022, an Alaska Native male, 21-year-old Robert Rones, sat behind the wheel of a car in South Fairbanks when two vehicles slid into position and boxed him in at 27th Avenue and Mercier Street. A man stepped out of the lead vehicle and opened fire, striking Rones multiple times as he remained seated. Officers and medics raced to the scene, but he died of six gunshot wounds before emergency crews could reach him.
