On the night of January 28, 2024, 30-year-old Demarkus Ge-Juan Hall, also known as 'Shrek,' was fatally shot at the Landmark Apartments in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Hall, a male, was reportedly at the apartment complex visiting friends, as he did not reside there. The incident, which occurred around 10:30 p.m., was not a random act of violence. Investigators with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit determined that Hall was the specific target of a premeditated robbery that ultimately escalated and
led to his death. Police have indicated that the robbery was connected to the local drug trade.
The investigation into Hall's murder was described as complex, with suspects who had extensive criminal histories and went to great lengths to cover their tracks and evade law enforcement. Despite these efforts, authorities were able to identify and apprehend four men in connection with the fatal shooting. The arrests came after weeks of intensive investigation, with one suspect being apprehended as far away as Shelbyville, Tennessee. The cooperation of citizens was noted as being crucial to the successful outcome of the investigation.
The first of the arrests was made on February 1, 2024, when police took 34-year-old Jamil Pierre Prentice into custody, charging him with conspiracy to commit robbery. He was later released on bond but was taken back into custody on unrelated charges in another county. On February 6, 31-year-old Rashad Jamal Aaron was arrested and charged with felony murder and robbery. His release on a prior burglary charge was revoked, and he was held without bond. A third suspect, 44-year-old Kyandre Davincent Grant, was arrested in Tennessee and charged with capital murder during a robbery. Grant has a significant criminal history, including a prior murder conviction from 1996 for which he served a 20-year sentence. He is also being held without bond.
The fourth and final suspect, 29-year-old Cadarious Williams, turned himself in to authorities and was charged with felony murder. Like the other suspects charged with murder in this case, he is being held without bond. With the arrest of Williams, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit announced that all suspects believed to be directly involved in the murder of Demarkus Hall were in custody. While the investigation remains ongoing and further charges could be possible, authorities do not anticipate charging any other individuals with murder in this case.
