The brazen daylight attack occurred near Savoy Elementary School, prompting a brief lockdown of the facility to protect the students and staff.
Emergency services arrived at the scene to find Mercer unconscious and
suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the location. The area was quickly secured by the Metropolitan Police Department, who began their investigation into the homicide.
