On March 19, 2024, 28-year-old Byron McNeal Jr. of Bessemer, Alabama, was fatally shot in Birmingham's Smithfield community. At approximately 4 p.m., officers from the North Precinct responded to reports of a person shot near 2nd Street North and 6th Avenue North. Upon arrival, they found McNeal lying unresponsive in the roadway, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported him to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
