In the heart of a Birmingham, Alabama afternoon, the life of 28-year-old Byron Jerome McNeal Jr. was tragically cut short. On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, McNeal was found lying in the roadway of a quiet residential street, the victim of a fatal shooting. The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. in the 1700 block of 29th Avenue North, where the sounds of gunfire had shattered the neighborhood's calm.

Precinct officers arrived at a grim scene. McNeal was discovered unresponsive on the pavement, having sustained at least one gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service paramedics pronounced him dead shortly after their arrival, casting a somber shadow over the community. The initial investigation by police suggested that a targeted attack had taken place, with the preliminary belief that the shooter or shooters had specifically sought out McNeal.
