In the small, rural community of West Blocton, Alabama, a summer evening turned into a scene of unimaginable horror on July 18, 2024. Six-year-old Kaleb Kendrick, a young boy who loved Spiderman and playing baseball, was tragically killed. He was a student at West Blocton Elementary School, remembered for being both shy and playful.
That Thursday night, what was meant to be a celebration of a cousin's birthday ended in a devastating loss of life. Kaleb, along with his mother, Kelse Kendrick, 24, his two-year-old sister, Kynli Grace Kendrick, and two cousins, six-year-old Haley Daniels and eight-year-old Colton Daniels, were all shot and killed. The family had gathered at a home on Greentree Drive.
The alleged perpetrator was identified as Brandon Allan Kendrick, II, who was Kaleb's father. Following the incident, Kendrick's grandfather, a retired pastor, managed to subdue him after hearing gunshots and finding his grandson armed with a shotgun. Authorities were called to the scene around 10 p.m. after receiving a report that a child had been shot. Upon arrival, they discovered the horrific scene.
Brandon Kendrick was taken into custody at the home without a struggle and was subsequently charged with five counts of capital murder. He was later indicted on these charges by a grand jury and faces the possibility of the death penalty. Investigators reported that all the victims died from gunshots to the head. A motive for the killings has not been publicly disclosed. The community was left in shock and mourning, with law enforcement officials describing the scene as the worst they had ever witnessed.
