In the late afternoon of Saturday, December 2, 2023, the Inglenook community in Birmingham, Alabama, was shattered by the sound of a shootout. Just before 4 p.m., multiple calls flooded the Birmingham 911 Communications Division, reporting the gunfire. East Precinct officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of 38th Place North on a report of a person shot.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a vehicle parked in the driveway of a residence.
Inside the vehicle, they found 24-year-old Courtney Spencer, a Black male, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced Spencer deceased.
The preliminary investigation suggests that a shootout had taken place in the area, and during the exchange of gunfire, Spencer was struck. Evidence at the scene indicated that multiple houses in the vicinity had also been hit by bullets. The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation into the death of Courtney Spencer. As of now, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Authorities are asking for anyone with information regarding the case to come forward.
