In the early hours of October 15, 2022, 25-year-old Birmingham resident Roderick Earl Gray Jr. was fatally shot. At approximately 2:40 a.m., two off-duty Birmingham Police officers, working security at the Playhouse II nightclub on 4th Street North, were alerted to a shooting incident nearby. Upon arrival, they discovered Gray unresponsive in an alleyway across the street, suffering from a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
