On a summer evening in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of 16-year-old Kavas Jemison, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On July 23, 2022, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the young man was discovered unresponsive in the back seat of a vehicle on Interstate 59/20 southbound, near the Bush Boulevard exit. First responders from the Birmingham Police Department and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene, where they found that Jemison had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his head
and he was pronounced dead.
Investigators believe the shooting did not happen on the interstate but rather in the Pratt City area, which was near where Jemison lived. In a turn of events, a female went to the police department's West Precinct shortly after the incident, suggesting she might have been involved in the shooting. Detectives questioned her, but no charges were immediately filed. Authorities later announced that they had identified the individuals involved in the case and had turned their findings over to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office for review.
Kavas Jemison was a student who had just finished his 10th-grade year at Jackson-Olin High School. His mother, Akita Jemison, remembered her son as a loving and kind individual. He was a familiar and friendly face in his neighborhood, often seen cutting grass for his neighbors and walking his dogs. In the wake of this tragedy, his mother has become an advocate for creating more constructive activities for young people, hoping to prevent other families from experiencing such a profound loss.
