In the early evening of a Wednesday in the summer of 2022, 16-year-old Jamie Monte Gibson, a male student from Center Point, Alabama, was fatally shot in Birmingham. The incident occurred around 5:46 p.m. at the intersection of Overton Road and Liberty Parkway, near the exit of I-459. Gibson was a sophomore at Huffman High School, and his death marked the 42nd murder investigation in the city that year.
According to witnesses, a sedan was seen driving up the I-459 exit, followed by the
sound of gunshots. Shortly after, Gibson was seen exiting the vehicle and collapsing onto the road. Officers from both the Birmingham and Vestavia Police Departments responded to the scene. Vestavia Fire and Rescue transported Gibson to Grandview Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead less than twenty minutes after the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, law enforcement officials stated that the details surrounding the shooting were limited, and no suspects had been taken into custody. The Birmingham Police Department's Homicide Unit opened an investigation and requested that anyone with information come forward.
