On a cold January morning in 2022, the body of 20-year-old John Christopher Taylor-Wilson, a male from the Maytown community, was discovered on the side of the road in a grassy area off of Eastern Valley Road at the entrance to a subdivision in the Bessemer area of Jefferson County. An autopsy would later confirm that he had been shot to death. The discovery was made by a passerby on Saturday, January 8, 2022.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office immediately launched a homicide investigation, but details about any potential suspects or motives were not initially released to the public.
The investigation into the death of Taylor-Wilson revealed a complex and troubled recent history for the young man. At the time of his murder, he was out on bond for a separate and very serious charge. In May of 2021, he had been arrested and charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of 21-year-old Tilo Moa. This earlier incident had taken place in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant in Hueytown, another city within Jefferson County. The circumstances surrounding that case, in which another individual was also injured, painted a picture of a life that was already entangled with violence.
Despite the ongoing investigation into his death, law enforcement has not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in the homicide of John Christopher Taylor-Wilson. The case, like the one in which he was a suspect, highlights the cycle of violence that can ensnare young lives. His death came just a day before another man's body was found in a neighboring city, though authorities did not believe the two cases were related.
