On a tragic day in April 2021, the life of 24-year-old Katlynn Marie Jones was cut short in Jacksonville, Alabama. On Saturday, April 17th, police were alerted to a horrific scene at Jones's home after the suspect's mother reported that her son, 21-year-old Alex L. Haynes, confessed to killing Jones. Officers arrived to find the young woman deceased, having sustained multiple gunshot and knife wounds. The tragedy was compounded by the discovery that her 4-year-old son had also been shot in the head.
The young boy was rushed to a hospital in Birmingham in critical condition. As law enforcement began their investigation, a search for Haynes was initiated. Anniston police soon located him, but he fled, leading officers on a chase that spanned from Calhoun County into Talladega County. The pursuit ended when Haynes stopped in a field and took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot.
Authorities identified Haynes as Jones's boyfriend but did not release a motive for the violent attack. Friends and family remembered Katlynn as a woman who was full of life and loved making others feel beautiful through her work in cosmetology. A graduate of Alexandria High School, she was described as the life of the party, someone who loved to dance, sing, and spend time outdoors. Above all, she was a devoted mother whose world revolved around her son, Mason.
