A routine Saturday morning in Bessemer, Alabama, took a grim turn when a wrecked vehicle was discovered on the corner of 15th Street North and Carolina Avenue. Washington was rushed to a local hospital, where the true and more sinister nature of his injuries was uncovered by medical staff.
He had sustained a gunshot wound, a revelation that immediately shifted the focus of the investigation from a traffic incident to a homicide.
The Bessemer Police Department quickly began to piece together the events that led to Washington's death. Their investigation led them to believe that the fatal shot was not fired at the scene of the crash. Evidence suggested that the shooting actually occurred at the Oak Crest apartments, a nearby residential complex.
