In May of 2020, the life of 45-year-old Michael Jones, a beloved husband and father from Columbus, Mississippi, was tragically cut short in Bessemer, Alabama. Jones, a hardworking man, had finished his shift at Steel Dynamics/Severstal on the morning of May 20th and was expected back for his evening shift, but he never arrived. His uncharacteristic absence prompted his concerned family to begin a search for him.
The family's investigation into his whereabouts led them to track his phone,
which showed a path from his hometown to Tuscaloosa, and then to Bessemer. They soon discovered that he had been communicating with someone through the 'Letgo' trading app to purchase an iPhone 11. It is believed that the seller initially arranged to meet in Tuscaloosa but then changed the location to Bessemer, enticing Jones with a lower price.
Tragically, Jones was found shot to death inside an abandoned house in Bessemer on May 22nd. His Ford Ranger pickup truck was also recovered that day. The heartbreaking discovery confirmed the family's worst fears, leaving them to mourn the loss of a man they described as the 'embodiment of love.'
In April 2021, a juvenile suspect was arrested in Bessemer and charged with felony murder in connection with Jones's death. Further details about the suspect, including their name and age, were not publicly released. The investigation into the case was reported to be ongoing.
