In the late afternoon hours of Sunday, July 24, 2022, 39-year-old Ricky Howard Hamrick II, a male from Bremen, Georgia, traveled to Bessemer, Alabama, with the intention of selling two handguns through a prearranged meeting on Facebook Marketplace. The transaction was set to take place in the 1300 block of 6th Avenue North. Tragically, this business dealing turned into a fatal encounter for Hamrick, who was accompanied by his eight-year-old daughter.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., as
Hamrick sat in the driver's seat of his vehicle, he was met by at least two individuals who approached on foot. Shortly after the meeting began, shots were fired, and Hamrick was struck by gunfire. The assailants then fled with the firearms. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found Hamrick deceased in his car. His young daughter, who was in the passenger seat, witnessed the entire traumatic event but was physically unharmed. Residents in the area heard the gunshots and rushed to the aid of the young girl, taking her into their home until police arrived.
The Bessemer Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and any available surveillance footage. In the course of their investigation, they identified a vehicle of interest: an early 2000s maroon or burgundy four-door Toyota Avalon, distinguished by a black front passenger door. Authorities believe this vehicle may have been involved in similar robberies in the area. Despite public appeals for information and the announcement of an enhanced reward, which grew to $20,000 thanks to a contribution from Hamrick's grandfather, no arrests have been made in the case.
