In the summer of 2019, the life of 27-year-old Cory Tyron Mitchell was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. On the evening of June 27th, in the community of Cottondale, Alabama, Mitchell was in the front yard of his residence on Clearview Street when the fatal encounter unfolded. The incident, which investigators later characterized as a suspected drug deal that had gone wrong, left Mitchell with mortal wounds from which he would not recover. He was a male who was known to some by the nickname 'Tyron.'
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to a suspect, Shisheem Tecoan Smith. Evidence gathered by law enforcement, including a search of a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox, implicated Smith in the homicide. He was subsequently arrested and, in August of 2019, indicted on the grave charge of capital murder. The vehicle in which Smith was a passenger was driven by a woman, and another male friend was also present in the front passenger seat at the time of the shooting. Despite their presence at the scene, neither of these individuals faced charges in connection with Mitchell's death.
The legal proceedings against Shisheem Tecoan Smith culminated in a plea agreement. In a Tuscaloosa courtroom, Smith entered a plea to the charge of murder. Following the acceptance of his plea, he was sentenced to serve 30 years in prison for his role in the death of Cory Tyron Mitchell.
