On November 12, 2022, in Cottondale, Alabama, 61-year-old Barry Sartain was found deceased in an outbuilding on his property. Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputies conducted a welfare check at Sartain's residence on Fork Lane after receiving a tip that a resident had allegedly killed his roommate. Upon arrival, they encountered 24-year-old Daniel Raines, who also lived at the residence.
