On February 26, 2019, 45-year-old inmate Steven Eric Mullins was found unresponsive with multiple stab wounds in a housing area at St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville, Alabama. He was airlifted to a hospital for treatment but succumbed to his injuries two days later. Mullins had been serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the 1999 murder of Billy Jack Gaither, a crime that drew national attention due to its brutal nature and the victim's sexual orientation.
