In the winter of 2019, a dispute between two men in Brighton, Alabama, escalated to a fatal conclusion, ending the life of 27-year-old Cadarius Munford. On December 20, 2019, Munford was shot and killed in Bessemer. The authorities investigating the shooting pointed to a disagreement as the catalyst for the deadly encounter. Munford was a Black male.
Following the shooting, the investigation quickly led to a suspect.
Vijay Ramure Lipscomb, 33 years old at the time of the incident, was taken into custody in connection with Munford's death. He was subsequently charged with murder and held without bond starting December 21, 2019. The case against Lipscomb proceeded, and in February 2020, it was bound over to a grand jury for consideration of an indictment.
The legal proceedings against Lipscomb took an unexpected turn in April 2020. While incarcerated and awaiting trial, Lipscomb was found unresponsive in his cell. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, he was seen on camera inhaling an unknown substance before returning to his cell. Despite being transported to a hospital, Lipscomb was pronounced dead. An autopsy was ordered to determine the official cause of his death, but authorities stated that foul play was not suspected. His death brought an end to the murder case against him in the shooting death of Cadarius Munford.
