On July 12, 2023, at approximately 8:30 a.m., 29-year-old Birmingham firefighter Jordan Melton and his colleague, Jamal Jones, were performing routine maintenance at Fire Station 9 in the Norwood neighborhood when an unidentified assailant entered through an open bay door and opened fire. Both firefighters sustained critical injuries and were transported to UAB Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Melton succumbed to his injuries on July 17, 2023.
