On a Wednesday morning in Birmingham, Alabama, the life of Darryl Bowie, a 56-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short. On November 15, 2023, at approximately 10:40 a.m., Bowie was in the 400 block of 5th Street Pratt when an unknown assailant or assailants opened fire in a drive-by shooting. Responding to a call of a person shot, West Precinct officers arrived to find a grim scene.
Bowie was discovered lying unresponsive in the roadway, having sustained a gunshot wound.
Alongside Bowie, an adult female was also found on the sidewalk, herself a victim of the gunfire. Emergency services from Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived at the location and pronounced Bowie deceased at the scene. The female victim was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. The preliminary investigation suggests that both individuals were the intended targets of the shooters, who fled the area in a vehicle immediately following the assault.
