Phillips, a male resident of Cordova and believed to be from the Birmingham area, was discovered fatally shot inside his vehicle at the intersection of Highway 78 and North Main Street. The initial call to police was for a man stopped in his car at a stop sign, but upon arrival, it was evident that a violent crime had occurred.

determined that Phillips had been shot while inside his car. A former Army Ranger who had served his country in Syria and was a recipient of a Purple Heart, Phillips was also a father to a young daughter. Authorities have expressed interest in a small red or maroon sedan with a distinctive white, yellow, and green car lot tag that was seen in the vicinity around the time of the shooting.
