In the early hours of March 27, 2013, a night out for 21-year-old Dimontrell Pompey, an African-American male, and his companions took a tragic turn. After an evening of bar-hopping in Milwaukee, the group decided to get something to eat. At the restaurant, an intoxicated Pompey was asked to leave by a security guard. He then walked off by himself.
Later, Pompey was picked up and driven back to his residence in the 7000 block of N. 43rd St. Upon arriving home, an argument ensued. Pompey expressed his frustration that no one had defended him at the restaurant. During this confrontation, a 28-year-old man punched Pompey in the head. According to Pompey's brother, who was present, his sibling fell to the ground on his back, bleeding from his nose and mouth.
Dimontrell Pompey was taken to Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-St. Joseph's hospital. He succumbed to his injuries on March 30, 2013, becoming the city's 14th homicide victim of the year. Following the incident, a 28-year-old male suspect was taken into custody in connection with Pompey's death. Police sought a DNA sample from the suspect, who had initially refused to provide one, as part of their investigation.
