A woman's body is discovered alongside Route 50 On a frigid morning in Loudoun County, Virginia, the life of 20-year-old Veronica Hepworth, known to her friends as 'Roni,' came to a tragic end. On February 25, 1982, at approximately 7:00 a.m., a passerby discovered her partially clothed body along a driveway off of Route 50, near Gilberts Corner. The investigation into her death would become an enduring cold case, haunting the community for decades.
The evening before her body was found, Hepworth was out with friends celebrating a
birthday at the Fancy Dancer Bar on Route 1 in Fairfax County. She was last seen alive around 1:30 a.m. outside the establishment. It remains unclear if she left the bar alone, accepted a ride from someone, or attempted to hitchhike home. Hours later, she was found deceased miles away in rural Loudoun County. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was manual strangulation.
The homicide investigation, which remains active to this day, has been a joint effort between the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police. Investigators have pursued various leads over the years, including reports of a red pickup truck, possibly a late 1960s or 1970s model, that was seen near the farm where her body was discovered. A primary focus of the investigation has been to identify a man described as her last-known serious boyfriend. This unidentified white male with dark hair is considered a person of interest.
In an effort to generate new leads, authorities released a photograph of the boyfriend from 1982 and, in 2015, an age-progression composite sketch of what he might look like in his mid-50s to early 60s. Despite these efforts and repeated public appeals for information, neither the boyfriend nor any other suspect has been officially named or arrested in connection with the murder. The case of Veronica Hepworth's murder is still unsolved, leaving her family and investigators still searching for answers.
