An elderly woman is found beaten to death On the evening of Friday, July 15, 1988, just as the sun was beginning to set, Anastasia Christou, a small, 4-foot-11-inch white female, returned to her home in the 300 block of 25 Half Street in Virginia Beach, a quiet residence just three blocks from the Atlantic Ocean. This would be the last time she was seen alive. The following day, a little after noon on Saturday, July 16, 1988, her son made a horrifying discovery.
He found his mother inside her home, suffering from severe wounds from a brutal beating.
Emergency services were called, but Anastasia succumbed to her injuries and died. Investigators determined that force had been used to gain entry into her home while she was sleeping. The motive for this vicious attack is believed to be theft. Her body was taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office, where the manner of her death was officially ruled a homicide.
Despite the investigation into her murder, the case remains unsolved. There have been no arrests, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Virginia Beach Police Department's Cold Case Homicide Unit continues to list Anastasia Christou's case as active and unsolved, hoping that someone may still come forward with information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her death.
