On March 6, 2011, Bridget Caldwell, a 38-year-old Black woman, was found dead inside her apartment in west Houston, bringing an ordinary morning to a devastating end for her family. Caldwell had failed to report to work, prompting her father to go to her residence on Dunvale Street to check on her. He discovered her deceased that afternoon. An autopsy later determined that Caldwell had been strangled, and Houston police opened a homicide investigation into her death.

Investigators soon focused attention on Earnest Harold Smith, who had been romantically involved with Caldwell. Authorities identified Smith as a person of interest during the original investigation, but the case did not result in an arrest at the time. According to court documents later described by Houston-area media, prosecutors said Caldwell and Smith had been involved in an on-and-off relationship lasting roughly five or six years. Smith acknowledged having had a relationship with Caldwell but reportedly told investigators that they had broken up approximately two years before her death.

The later court filings revealed allegations that added a troubling history to the relationship. Caldwell had reportedly told others about incidents of domestic violence and stalking involving Smith and had expressed fear that he would kill her if their relationship ended. Detectives also learned that she had confided in three people about an alleged incident in which Smith held a gun to her head and threatened to kill her. Smith denied the domestic-violence allegations. Court documents further alleged that Smith had invited Caldwell to dinner on the day of her death and that she declined, although Smith disputed information presented to investigators about that encounter. Prosecutors ultimately accused Smith of causing Caldwell's death by applying pressure to her neck.

For years, however, the investigation remained unresolved. The case was eventually assigned to the Houston Police Department's Cold Case Squad, whose investigators continued examining the evidence long after the initial inquiry had stalled. Police have said that additional evidence was ultimately developed linking Smith to Caldwell's killing, although authorities have not publicly disclosed exactly what that evidence was. The renewed investigation transformed Smith's status from a longtime person of interest into a criminal defendant more than 15 years after Caldwell was killed.

On September 18, 2026, Houston police arrested Smith and charged him with murder in connection with Caldwell's death. The case was filed in the 209th Criminal District Court in Harris County. Smith subsequently appeared for arraignment, where a judge set his bond at $100,000. He later posted that bond and was released from the Harris County Jail under conditions that included GPS monitoring. Local reporting indicated that he was scheduled to return to court in November.

As of the most recent publicly available reporting, Smith has been charged but has not been reported convicted or acquitted in Caldwell's killing. The prosecution therefore remains pending, and the allegations against him have not yet been established by a verdict at trial. His 2026 arrest marked the first criminal charge reported in the case after more than a decade and a half of unanswered questions surrounding Caldwell's strangulation.
