On January 21, 2014, Merlyn Yolibeth Perez-Orellana, a 24-year-old mother, was fatally shot while walking in west Houston to pick up her young daughter from school. The shooting occurred in the 3400 block of Rockyridge Drive, near Emerson Elementary School. A male suspect approached Perez-Orellana and shot her multiple times before fleeing the scene on foot.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic male in his 30s, approximately 5'7", with a slim build. A composite sketch was released, and the investigation remains ongoing as police seek more information regarding the case. Perez-Orellana’s daughter was subsequently placed in Child Protective Services custody and later returned to her father in Honduras after an extended legal process to confirm her safety with him. This tragic incident left the young girl partially orphaned, as her mother had sought asylum in the United States to escape a difficult situation in Honduras involving alleged abuse by the child's father. The case underscores the complexities that arise when violent crime intersects with immigration and family safety issues
