In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 9, 2008, Tremayne Lamont Woods, a 27-year-old African-American man, was at a Nashville nightclub called The Place, located at 217 2nd Avenue South. An argument erupted between Woods and another Black male, prompting a security guard to intervene and separate the two. Following the altercation, the man Woods had argued with, accompanied by a group of about six other individuals, stepped outside onto the porch.
