On April 27, 2007, Thomas Howard, a 27-year-old man from Pittsburgh, was killed in a homicide that added to the grim statistics of violence in Allegheny County. Howard's death was part of a broader trend of increasing homicides within the Pittsburgh area, which continued throughout the 2000s despite national reductions in homicide rates.
