Beau Zabel, a 23-year-old aspiring teacher from Minnesota, was fatally shot on June 15, 2008, in South Philadelphia. Zabel had recently moved to Philadelphia to begin his teaching career and was employed at a Starbucks while preparing to teach in the fall. On the night of the incident, Zabel was walking home from work in the Italian Market area around 1 a.m. when he was shot from behind, with the apparent motive being theft of his iPod.
