A 20 year old is killed during a drive-by shooting on Highway 99. On June 1, 2001, 20-year-old Andrew Witherow was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting while traveling on Highway 99 in Sacramento County, California. Witherow was a passenger in a car driven by his friend Loc Huynh when a vehicle pulled up alongside them and fired multiple shots. The shooting occurred late on a Saturday night as they were driving north approaching the Fruitridge exit. The assailants' motives remain unclear, but the attack left both Witherow and Huynh wounded.
Huynh managed to call 911 and brought the car to a stop in the middle of the highway, but the situation escalated when several other cars crashed into their stopped vehicle, causing it to burst into flames. While Huynh was able to escape, Witherow was tragically unable to do so and died as a result of the incident.
The case has remained unsolved for over two decades, with no arrests made and very few leads. The lack of witnesses and insufficient evidence have been significant roadblocks in the investigation, leaving Witherow’s family desperate for answers. Witherow's sister, Julia Robinson, spoke about the tragedy and how difficult it has been for the family to find closure without knowing who was responsible for her brother's death. The Sacramento Police Department and Witherow’s family have repeatedly appealed for information from the public that might help solve the case, but unfortunately, no significant breakthroughs have been made to date.
This homicide is part of the broader landscape of unsolved cases in Sacramento County, reflecting ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in solving cold cases with limited evidence and witness testimony. The community continues to hope that someone will come forward with information that could finally bring justice to Andrew Witherow and provide his grieving family with the closure they deserve.
