In the Hill District of Pittsburgh on the afternoon of April 6, 2011, a young man's life was cut short in a burst of gunfire. Stephon Green, a 19-year-old male from the Oak Hill area, was found lying in the street at the intersection of LaPlace Street and Centre Avenue with multiple gunshot wounds. The shooting, which occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m., prompted a nearby elementary school to be placed on lockdown as police began their investigation.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing a forest green-colored Nissan Armada with tinted windows speeding away from the area.
The investigation into Stephon Green's death led authorities to several individuals. A videotape of the murder showed one man, later identified as Calvin Kane, shooting Green multiple times before fleeing on foot. Kane, also known as 'CK,' was subsequently charged with the murder of Stephon Green and was scheduled to face trial.
Two other men who were present at the scene of the murder, Kedrin 'Hoody' Turner and Ernest 'Pickles' Harris, were also implicated in connection with the incident and faced federal firearms charges. The gun used in the murder was later matched to a firearm that Harris was seen brandishing in a separate incident. While Harris and Turner were not charged with Green's murder, their involvement and subsequent prosecutions on firearms violations were a direct result of the investigation into Green's death. Another man, Bafata 'B' Sullivan, was identified as the owner of the gun allegedly used by Kane in the murder and also faced federal firearms charges before he died of natural causes.
