James Fleming, a 39-year-old Black male from Homewood, was outside along Kedron Street in Pittsburgh’s Homewood neighborhood on July 16, 2013, when an ordinary afternoon turned into a homicide investigation. Police said the shooting happened around 12:40 to 12:45 p.m. in the 7000 block of Kedron Street, where Fleming had been working on a vehicle outside a home. Witnesses reported hearing a car and then three or four gunshots. When people came outside, Fleming was found lying on the sidewalk.
Fleming had been shot multiple times. His girlfriend came outside after the gunfire and found him on the sidewalk, and a Pittsburgh Zone 5 officer performed CPR before he was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Despite the attempt to save him, Fleming was pronounced dead shortly afterward, with reports placing his death around 1:30 p.m. or roughly 20 minutes after the shooting.
The killing left investigators with little public information to work from. Police said at the time that no suspects had been identified, and there was no publicly reported motive. The New Pittsburgh Courier later included Fleming among July 2013 homicide victims in Allegheny County and reported that no one had been charged and that the investigation was ongoing.
Fleming’s death came during a violent day in Homewood. Later that same afternoon, the body of a young woman was found more than a dozen blocks away on Hallam Street, but police said there was no immediate indication that the two shootings were connected. Fleming’s case, as reported in the available online sources, appears to have remained unresolved publicly, with no arrests, suspects, charges, trial, or conviction reported in connection with his death.
