On a summer afternoon in Pittsburgh, tragedy struck in the city's Homewood neighborhood. On Thursday, August 1, 2013, 36-year-old Augustus 'Gus' Cicero McClain was found in his vehicle at the intersection of Murtland and Mount Vernon streets, the victim of a fatal shooting. The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m., and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:39 p.m.
Authorities reported that McClain had been shot multiple times in the head, torso, and arms while he was in the driver's
seat of his 2013 Ford Escape. A 911 caller reported hearing four gunshots and seeing a Black male running from the vehicle. The suspect was described as having medium skin, short, cropped hair, and wearing a gray T-shirt and black shorts.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators canvassed the Homewood neighborhood but had difficulty finding witnesses who were willing to come forward with information. The police publicly asked for anyone with information to contact them.
Despite the initial description of a potential suspect, there have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the murder of Augustus McClain. His death left behind his wife, children, and a large extended family. The case, by all public accounts, remains unsolved.
