In the early morning hours of June 1, 2014, Clayton Brunson, a 27-year-old Black male, was inside Ficklin's Bar on Fifth Avenue in Uptown Pittsburgh when his life was cut short. An argument between two men escalated, and multiple gunshots rang out within the crowded establishment, which held approximately 200 patrons. Brunson was struck at least once in the abdomen.
He was rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he underwent surgery but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 2:40 a.m. A second man, who was 25 years old, was also shot in the foot but survived his injuries.
The shooting sent waves of shock and grief through the community, particularly among those who knew Brunson for his dedicated work with local youth. He was remembered as a role model who was passionate about community engagement and keeping young people off the streets. His death left behind a devastated family, including his young daughter and fiancée. In the wake of the tragedy, Brunson's mother, Tonya Goodnight, publicly called for the closure of Ficklin's Bar, pointing to a history of violence at the location. The owners of the bar agreed to a temporary closure as the investigation commenced.
Despite the large number of potential witnesses inside the bar at the time of the shooting, the investigation proved to be challenging for the Pittsburgh Police. Authorities urged anyone with information to come forward, even anonymously, but a suspect was never publicly identified. It remained unclear whether surveillance cameras at the venue captured the shooting itself. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Clayton Brunson, and his case remains unsolved.
