Ronnell Smith, aged 25, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of October 24, 2014, in Pittsburgh's West End neighborhood. The incident took place as Smith was sitting in the driver's seat of his SUV in a parking lot near the Lee Tuck Lounge on Steuben Street. According to the investigation, Smith was shot multiple times through the driver’s side window.
Two men were reportedly seen running away from the scene after the shooting, but no arrests have been made in connection to the homicide, and the case remains unsolved.
Evidence collected at the crime scene included several bullet casings of different calibers around the vehicle. Law enforcement also recovered a firearm nearby, in a creek, which matched the ballistics of the bullets found in Smith’s body. Surveillance footage from businesses in the area captured two individuals fleeing the scene; however, due to the poor quality of the footage, their identities remain unclear. The suspects were described as one being a tall, slender African-American man with short hair, while the other was stockier with long dreadlocks.
Despite the recovery of some forensic evidence, the investigation has faced significant challenges. At a preliminary hearing in 2017, charges against a potential suspect were dropped because the available evidence was deemed insufficient to establish a strong case. The lack of witness testimony and the inability to conclusively link the suspect to the crime contributed to the case's dismissal, leaving Smith's family still waiting for justice.
The murder of Ronnell Smith occurred during a year when Pittsburgh was experiencing a spike in violent crime, with 2014 marking one of the highest homicide rates in recent years.
