Ricardo Tobia, a 71-year-old male of Italian ethnicity, was found dead in his home in the 500 block of Kirk Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA, on July 7, 2018. Tobia, a longtime voice instructor at Point Park University, was brutally murdered by his roommate, Joseph Martin, 37. Martin pleaded guilty but mentally ill to third-degree murder, admitting to stabbing Tobia multiple times, nearly decapitating him, and shooting him in the head.
Tobia's dog was also killed in the incident.
The investigation revealed that Martin had a history of mental illness. In the days leading up to the murder, Martin's mother reported that he had been in a catatonic state and exhibiting erratic behavior. After Tobia's body was discovered, Martin was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric ward. During the investigation, police found blood-stained shoes and other evidence linking Martin to the crime scene.
Martin was sentenced to 14 to 28 years in prison for the murder. The case highlighted the challenges of addressing mental health issues in the criminal justice system and the tragic consequences that can result from untreated mental illness.
