Izzadeen Burgos, a 21-year-old Hispanic male, was standing outside his home in the 400 block of West Wingohocken Street on July 19, 2015. It was shortly after 11 p.m. when an unidentified individual approached and shot him in the face.
Izzadeen was rushed to Temple University Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of July 20, 2015. The shooting was witnessed by his own father, who bravely gave chase to the assailant for a block before the gunman turned and fired at him, ultimately escaping in a dark-colored Toyota.
Izzadeen's life was one marked by incredible resilience from a very young age. When he was just two years old, he was shot by his father with a high-powered hunting rifle, an incident that led to the amputation of his left arm. Despite this profound challenge, he grew into a determined young man who refused to be defined by his disability. He found a passion for boxing, and under the mentorship of a retired Philadelphia Police officer, he became an inspirational figure in the local sports community, affectionately known as the 'Bionic Arm.' His courage in the ring, competing with one arm, brought boxing fans to tears and served as a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit.
Despite his inspirational journey in boxing, Izzadeen's life took a difficult turn in the years that followed. He had several encounters with law enforcement and served time in prison for drug and assault charges. At the time of his death, he was reportedly looking forward to mentoring young people, hoping to use his own experiences to guide others away from hardship. His murder sent shockwaves through his community, who remembered him as a kind-hearted and driven individual. The Philadelphia Police Department has investigated the case, and a significant reward was offered for information. However, to this day, no suspects have been identified or arrested, and the murder of Izzadeen Burgos remains an unsolved case, a painful and unanswered final chapter in a life that had been a story of both remarkable survival and tragic loss.
