On June 14, 2007, 53-year-old Jose Hernandez was killed in Long Beach, California. Hernandez's death occurred after he was struck by a vehicle driven by an individual attempting to flee from police. The incident unfolded during a high-speed chase through Long Beach when the suspect, later identified as Jyvante West, ran a red light and struck Hernandez, who was legally crossing the street with his dog at the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and 6th Street.
