On December 10, 2016, Michelle Mercuri, a 27-year-old woman, was tragically found dead in the South Side Slopes neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Police discovered her lying in the street, close to her home on Eccles Street, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene, and the medical examiner confirmed that her death was a homicide.
The incident was initially reported as a possible robbery, but later updates suggested a potential hostage situation, leading to the involvement of a SWAT team. However, no hostage situation was confirmed upon investigation.
Neighbors reported hearing sounds that resembled domestic violence, followed by a muffled gunshot. Riley Casaldi, a neighbor, mentioned that they heard what seemed to be arguing and a woman being assaulted, which then culminated in a gunshot. Another neighbor, John Levandoski, who had known Mercuri since childhood, expressed his deep sorrow over her tragic death, describing it as an innocent life lost.
At this point, no suspects have been identified, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are appealing for any information that could help solve the case.
