On August 9, 2007, Jayla Brown, a 19-year-old woman from Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, was tragically killed in a shooting. Jayla and her date, 22-year-old James Johnson, were sitting in a car on the 5200 block of Butler Street at around 1 a.m. when at least two gunmen approached the vehicle and opened fire. The attackers fired over 20 rounds into the car before fleeing the scene. Jayla was shot in the back and pronounced dead on the scene, while Johnson sustained injuries to his hand but survived.
