On what should have been a joyous celebration of her 19th birthday, Jayla Brown, a young Black woman from Pittsburgh, was tragically killed in a hail of gunfire in the early morning hours of August 9, 2007. She was the innocent victim of a targeted shooting in the Lawrenceville neighborhood, a devastating end to what had been a celebratory first date.
That evening, Jayla and her date, 22-year-old James Johnson, had enjoyed a movie and dinner to mark her birthday.
Afterwards, they drove to a recording studio on Butler Street. As they were sitting in their car, at least two gunmen, described as men in hooded sweatshirts, unleashed a barrage of more than 20 bullets into the vehicle. Jayla was struck and killed, while Johnson sustained injuries.
From the outset, police believed that Johnson was the intended target of the ambush and that Jayla was an unintended victim. The investigation was complicated by Johnson's lack of cooperation with law enforcement; he initially provided a false name to the authorities. Investigators later determined his real identity and found that he had an outstanding warrant for drug and firearms violations. Police have publicly stated their belief that Johnson knows the identity of the shooters.
The assailants fled the scene in what was described as a dark green and gold Chevrolet Astro van. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and pleas from Jayla's family for information, her murder remains unsolved. As of the last available reports, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting. The case stands as a painful loss for a family and a community, a promising life cut short by a senseless act of violence.
