In the winter of 2015, the promising life of Chalalai Chaihirunkarn, a 26-year-old Thai female, was tragically cut short in her Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania apartment. A doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University, she was discovered on Thursday, January 29th, the victim of a fatal shooting. The quiet of her residence in the Sherwood Towers on North Craig Street was broken when friends, concerned after not hearing from her for several days, requested a welfare check.
Responding officers entered the apartment to a grim scene.
Chalalai was found in her bedroom, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her head and chest. Alongside her was the body of her 29-year-old boyfriend, Bryan Springer, a Thai-American and a Carnegie Mellon alumnus who worked for the university. Evidence at the scene indicated that Springer had shot Chalalai before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide. Springer was found with a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Investigators noted that there were no signs of a struggle in the apartment.
The investigation into their deaths revealed that the couple had been in what friends described as a 'troubled' relationship. Police believe that jealousy may have been a motive for the tragic events. It was discovered that just two days before the bodies were found, Springer had legally purchased the 9mm Glock pistol used in the incident from a local gun shop. The store owner reported that Springer expressed an interest in sport shooting and home defense, and a background check revealed no criminal history that would have prevented the sale.
The news of Chalalai's violent death sent shockwaves through the Carnegie Mellon community and her home country of Thailand, where she was a scholarship student from Mahidol University. Arrangements were made to return her body to her family. As the sole suspect in her death also perished at the scene, the case concluded without any arrests or a trial, leaving behind only questions and the sorrow of a life taken too soon.
