In the fall of 2014, the life of 16-year-old Teaira Whitehead was tragically cut short, leaving a mystery that began to unravel when her body was discovered in a Pittsburgh park. A Black female, Teaira, who was affectionately known as 'TT,' was found by joggers on the afternoon of October 6th along a trail in Riverview Park. The discovery was immediately unsettling, as her body was found nude at the bottom of a hill, sparking a police investigation into what was clearly a suspicious death.
The last contact anyone had with the Homewood teenager was on the evening before she was found.
Initially, the cause of Teaira's death was not clear, and investigators awaited the results of an autopsy and toxicology tests to piece together the final hours of her life. The circumstances were made even more disturbing when it was revealed that bleach had been poured on her body, a measure often used in an attempt to destroy DNA evidence. This led authorities to believe that someone else was involved in the events leading to her death and had tried to conceal their connection to the tragic incident. While Teaira was known to associate with individuals involved with heroin, she was not described as a dealer herself but rather as a user.
In January 2015, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office announced that Teaira Whitehead had died from an accidental drug overdose. The toxicology report revealed a fatal combination of heroin and two over-the-counter medications used for colds and coughs. Despite the ruling of an accidental death, the investigation did not close. Instead, the focus of the Pittsburgh police shifted to determining if her death resulted from a 'drug delivery,' which is considered a felony in Pennsylvania. This meant that if they could identify the person or people who supplied her with the fatal dose of drugs, those individuals could face criminal charges. However, there have been no public announcements of any arrests or identification of suspects in the years that followed, and the case of who may have been with Teaira in her final moments and left her in the park remains unresolved.
