In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Pittsburgh's Manchester neighborhood, a simple act of kindness took a tragic turn, ending the life of 23-year-old Shayne Abrams. A certified nursing assistant and a devoted father to his young son, Abrams was known by his family as a hardworking man. Just hours before his death, he had dropped his mother off at her overnight shift at the same assisted-living facility where they both worked, a final exchange of 'I love you' unknowingly becoming their last.
Later that morning, at approximately 3 a.m. on June 4, 2017, Abrams was giving a friend a ride when they made a wrong turn onto the 1500 block of Manhattan Street. It was then that an unknown individual opened fire on his vehicle. In a desperate attempt to escape the sudden violence, Abrams accelerated, but he had already been struck by a single gunshot to the torso. His car crashed into a nearby house, the impact trapping him inside.
When police and paramedics arrived at the scene, they discovered Abrams unresponsive in the driver's seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 3:30 a.m. Investigators found several shell casings in the street, evidence of the violence that had unfolded moments before. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that Shayne Abrams' death was a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. In the days following the shooting, his family expressed their belief that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. As of the initial investigation, police had not identified any suspects or a motive in the killing, and no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the case.
