In the late hours of a winter evening, on February 4, 2005, Richard Don Latty was shot twice outside his condominium in the 2900 block of East 51st Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was discovered after being seen talking to individuals in front of his home. The 56-year-old man was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day. Born on September 25, 1948, Richard was a lifelong resident of Tulsa.
He attended Will Rogers High School and served in the US Army from July 1969 to January 1972. At the time of his death, he was a financial planner and the owner of Annuities Plus. Beyond his professional life, he had a passion for acting and was a member of the Chancel Choir.
The investigation into the shooting suggested a tragic case of mistaken identity. It was theorized that the assailant was not targeting Richard Latty, but rather his girlfriend's son, who was allegedly involved in drug-related activities. The suspect was described as a white male in his early twenties, standing approximately six feet tall with a slender build of around 130 pounds. He had dark hair and was seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, dark pants, and a black baseball cap. Witnesses reported seeing the shooter flee the scene in a light blue, American-made car that had damage on its right side. The vehicle, driven by an unknown individual, was last seen heading eastbound on East 51st Street.
Despite the available description of the suspect and the vehicle, no arrests have been made in the case, and it remains an unsolved homicide. The Tulsa Police Department's Cold Case Unit continues to seek information from the public regarding the murder of Richard Don Latty.
